About

Alafia Counseling and Consulting, PLLC, the meaning of Alafia...

Alafia is a word from the Yoruba language, spoken by the Yoruba people of West Africa. It translates to “peace,” “health,” or “well-being” , a greeting or blessing wishing someone peace or harmony. In spiritual and cultural contexts, it conveys a deep, restorative peace that encompasses mental, emotional, and physical balance. Welcome! I’m YoLanda Whitted, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) in North Carolina and the founder of Alafia Counseling & Consulting, PLLC, an in-person and telehealth practice committed to helping individuals and families restore balance, build resilience, and experience healing. I bring nearly two decades of experience in human services, youth advocacy, and community wellness to my counseling work. I hold a Master of Science in Counselor Education with a focus on Clinical Mental Health Counseling from East Carolina University and a Master of Business Administration from Capella University. My professional journey has included serving families in crisis, adults struggling with substance abuse, at-risk youth within the court system and diversion programs, facilitating trauma-informed therapy groups, and empowering individuals navigating life transitions, anxiety, grief, and generational patterns. At Alafia, I offer a safe, culturally affirming, and strengths-based space where healing can begin. I integrate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed care, expressive arts, and person-centered techniques to tailor each session to your unique goals, culture, and lived experience. Whether you're a teen learning to manage emotions, a young adult struggling with self-worth, or a caregiver seeking guidance, I believe therapy should feel both supportive and empowering. My goal is to help you uncover your voice, understand your story, and take actionable steps toward the life you want.
